Martha Argerich turns 80 today, to celebrate this occasion DG released her recording of the Debussy Fantaisie conducted by Daniel Barenboim. This and the other items of the disc were from Barenboim’s performances (as conductor and pianist) celebrating the Debussy anniversary of 2018.

Fantaisie (tracks 1-3) is new to the Argerich discography so that might mean a lot to Argerich fans. In this rarely played early work Debussy seemed to show that the piano concerto wasn’t the right format for him, he’d have to choose between the piano and the orchestra. As for Argerich’s performance, I’d blame the engineering that made Argerich sounded too dry and metallic. DG got this recording from Austrian Radio and did some remastering which usually meant a sub-par outcome.

Then came two string sonatas with Barenboim on piano. Michael Barenboim played the Violin Sonata (tracks 4-6) and Soltani did the Cello Sonata (tracks 7-9). I think it’d be enough to pinpoint what’s good with Soltani’s playing and you’ll see what Michael lacked. Soltani patiently unveiled the work’s charms, a long held note was a moment to behold, and a legato phrase with lots of notes was like a dance move.

La Mer (tracks 10-12) was taken from the same Vienna concerts of Fantaisie. I  commented on the Fantaisie as a non-Argerich fan and here’s my take on La Mer as a big fan of Barenboim’s live concerts as conductor. If you were used to the controlled spontaneity of Barenboim you’d get what he was aiming for. And if you don’t get it, you’d think he simply lost control, especially in the middle of the first movement. To me, it’d be much better to experience such performance live. At home, when one is somehow detached, it did sound a bit weird.
