Rachmaninov: Cello Sonata

This digital only release looks like a quid pro quo of Capuçon and Wang’s previous Chopin and Franck CD on Erato (Capuçon’s label). Now Wang brought Capuçon to her DG label and with the addition of some Brahms pieces with clarinet a CD release is slated for the coming October.

Listeners of this recording must resist the urge to turn up the volume. I suggest fixing the volume by listening to the fourth movement first. Just a minute or two will do, fix the maximum volume you could take and start over. Then, stay away from the volume knob. You must do that because Capuçon and Wang took the pianos and pianissimos of the piece seriously, only letting rip on the fortes but these just popped out quite occasionally. To my surprise, such approach worked as these soft passages weren’t played “soft”, to the contrary, they were so intense like a fire consuming from within. In the finale, the emotions finally became extroverted, but I didn’t sense a shed of exaggeration as they projected the outbursts with sharp precision.
