Tchaikovsky: The Seasons
Trio Zadig (Fuga Libera)

The Tchaikovsky piano trio is very well-played but there is one more work of his for this genre. The piano album The Seasons was transcribed by Alexander Goedicke into a piano trio. Although this arrangement isn’t a sequel to the grand Trio but may be savoured side by side.I think the trio version is more enjoyable in the sense that the melodies are now played by the violin or cello.
Already staples in the repertoire, June and October’s melancholy are enhanced when played with string instruments. The cheerful July, September and December are also more potent in this arrangement, but at the expense of the piano, who is reduced to a mere accompanying role.
To me, the phrasings of this performance are too contrived, the first note of the phrase being dragged excessively. But I eventually got over it and didn’t mind as much.
