The latest CD of Kremer plays Weinberg features two works from 1959. The Violin Concerto has four movements, the middle ones are both slow movements. The jaunty rhythm of the first movement brings to mind Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, also written in 1959. But the motoric rhythm of the orchestra provides an extra layer. The second movement has a sense of powerlessness that culminates in a catharsis in the third movement, but the emotions are promptly reined in. The fourth movement sounds like a tarantella or Funiculi Funicula, it’s too banal and not really an appropriate finale.
Sonata for Two Violins has three movements, I couldn’t really tell if Kremer was playing first or second fiddle. None of the two parts is the leader but still they take turns in taking up the melody and the accompaniment. Much of the momentum of the first movement derives from the crisscrossing of the two parts. Furthermore, this movement has a jaunty (again) rhythm and is a set of variations.
I prefer the other movements, though. The second movement starts with a sustained Adagio, leading to a serenade-like Andante. The third movement has a brisk metronome marking but the music is quite light-hearted. But it isn’t a baroque minuet that is hinted, rather the timid sarcasm of Shostakovich.
