The typical concert goer has a hard time with winds music, Mozart’s Gran Partita is the exception that has been programmed in symphony concerts. Alexei Ogrintchouk, oboe principal of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, serves as the leader to his wind colleagues of the same orchestra.
There are lots of Gran Partita recordings but I listened to this twice. I was bowled over by the exquisite phrasings, plus the ability to realize them. You can hardly hear a coarse edge or weak spot. The tuttis were well-balanced but the solos have various articulations that made scales or repeated notes very enjoyable.
As Gran Partita has no flutes, Ogrintchouk’s oboe is the most prominent part. His playing is free from mannerisms but has a sizable palette of colours. I believe this disc isn’t just for winds aficionados, even string players can learn a lot from the supreme phrasings, vibratos and articulations.
The filler is Beethoven’s Variations on Là ci darem la mano (from Don Giovanni). The little-known piece features two oboes and a cor anglais that wasn’t on Gran Partita.
