Bach, Brouwer: Canciones

Andreas Scholl (countertenor), Edin Karamazov (lute, guitar)  (Aparté)

(scroll down for English review)

Countertenor Andreas Scholl and lutenist Edin Karamazov reunited on an album of Bach and Brouwer. Actually I focused on the nine tracks with Scholl and they were spread into three groups. Brouwer’s arrangements of English Folk Songs (tracks 1-3) presented these beloved folk songs in a near-troubadour atmosphere. Brouwer’s own Canciones Amatorias (tracks 5-7) set three Spanish-language poems against a rather sophisticated guitar accompaniment. I listened to them several times, trying to take make sense of what is behind their elegance. The third group was Bach (tracks 14-16), including Bist du bei mir (track 14) which was actually not by Bach.

Scholl has what many would call an angelic voice and the engineering of this album certainly enhances this impression. Some would immerse in such heavenly delights but for me, unfortunately, heaven might be a bit too monotonous.
