Granados: Goyescas
Kun-Woo Paik (piano) (DG)

Although Goyescas isn’t bread-and-butter repertoire to me but I won’t say I’m a newbie. Yet Kun-Woo Paik’s interpretation is so fresh, so idiomatic that one might be tempted to claim this isn’t a classical pianist. Paik took the printed notes as the starting point and his playing proved that such music defies notation and is indeed a living creature.
I think the pivotal piece El Amor y la muerte (track 5) is more symphonic than the other pieces so I consider Paik’s rendition of it belongs to the salon than the concert hall. Perhaps it was his intention to maintain stylistic consistency.
