This all-Berg album seemed to arrange the pieces in order of difficulty to the listener. This must have been Shaham’s second recording of the Berg concerto (tracks 1-2), I haven’t compared this with the old recording, though. His tone in the first movement attempted to squeeze the full emotional intensity out of each note. To me, Shaham seemed to play this movement as an elegy rather than as a nostalgic dream. Such elegiac quality was escalated to agony in the first part of the second movement, and Shaham’s playing of the chorale section was dreamy enough to my taste. But generally speaking I wished both soloist and orchestra deliver a lighter sound and texture.

Seven Early Songs (tracks 3-9) are very enjoyable with Susanne Phillips as soprano. I like it precisely because she simply gave a full sound in her singing, without worrying too much of the text. The orchestra, as it did in the Violin Concerto, followed her voice closely.

Three Pieces for Orchestra (tracks 10-12) is my favourite Berg work. In it Berg tried to follow Mahler’s footsteps. But this is a tough work for the orchestra, the conductor, but most importantly, for the listener. There are simply too many details for your ears to catch. I feel that this recording was constructed on the mixing console because the details wouldn’t be all so clear in concert. But a recording is a recording, I wouldn’t really oppose such approach to realize Berg’s ideal picture.

The third movement (track 12) is an hommage to the Finale of Mahler 6, and the wooden hammer also has a prominent role here. Regardless of the mixing, MTT did render all details carefully yet he was brave enough in his tempo choices and made daring gradual or sudden changes in tempi. But the climaxes didn’t sound crushing to me, perhaps that’s because of the fuzzy mixing.
