Saint-Saëns: Symphony in A Major; Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2

Jean-Jacques Kantorow / Liège Philharmonic  (BIS)

There’s now a rush of Saint-Saëns discs for his anniversary. Jean-Jacques Kantorow and the Liège Philharmonic brought out three symphonies, the unnumbered A Major, and Nos. 1 and 2. I expect a second release of the Urbs Roma Symphony, written between Nos. 1 and 2, with the Organ Symphony to round off the cycle.

Saint-Saëns wrote the A Major Symphony (tracks 1-4) at age 15, as an exercise in extended writing. Mendelssohn had been dead for only three years and Schumann were still alive, the influence of the two could be felt at the beginning. But as the symphony unfolded, I found there was more of Haydn and Mozart in the balance of form and melody.

Three years later came No. 1 (tracks 5-8), Saint-Saëns plunged in the romantic symphony. There wasn’t just an enhanced vigour but some sort of innovation in the form. In the first movement, the slow introduction was placed after the exposition. The pastoral second movement was titled March-Scherzo. This, and the adagio third movement were my favourites of the whole symphony. The adagio was like an opera intermezzo with a waltzing melody. I don’t really care for the finale but the march-like rhythm and volume would please some ears.

The Second Symphony (tracks 9-12) now meant different to me after listening to two earlier works. I expected Saint-Saëns to further expand his canvas, but on the contrary he shrank it. A recitative was an innovative start for the first movement which then burst into the main section via a fugato passage. But Saint-Saëns didn’t bring us to another direction. The scherzo and the adagio were simply too concise and that was my overall impression of the whole symphony.

Rare works hardly got to be played and recorded with such dedication. They aren’t immortal masterpieces but brought me enough joy for a single listening.
