Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 30-32
Sunwook Kim (piano) (Accentus)

This is Sunwook Kim’s third Beethoven album for Accentus, with the final trilogy. I don’t think this series will evolve to be a complete set as the previous two volumes are all the famous sonatas with titles. Apart from CD this also comes with DVD and Blu-Ray versions so I guess Sunwook Kim must be a best-selling pianist.
I had to give this a second listen as I wasn’t sure of what I heard. The piano sound was unusually thin unless Kim pounded. It isn’t just the lack of decibels (I did crank up the volume) but that the tone lacked backbone. Perhaps he’s too liberal with the pedal. In terms of interpretation I sensed that Kim was aiming for profundity but it wasn’t backed up by emotions that reached for the heart. So like the piano sound this interpretation sounded too ethereal to my ears.
