My sixth time hearing Sokolov live in as many cities, and the first time since the pandemic. In Beethoven’s Eroica Variations his super-clarity in the tiniest note could still be heard, but I think such clarity defeated Beethoven’s intention to break down the notes to a degree that no pianist could play them all with perfect evenness. Although a sense of chaos was avoided, Sokolov still managed to project a path from darkness to light.
Brahms’ op.117 intermezzi were delivered at tempi faster than we’re used to. Rather than the staccato of the Beethoven that came before, a sweet legato prevailed, and he eschewed sentimentality. So Sokolov isn’t always the “slow” pianist he’s reputed to be.
Schumann’s Kreisleriana took up the second half. I must confess I no longer reacted as ardently as when I saw him ten years ago. And the last couple of times I noticed mannerisms that I didn’t like. But this Kreisleriana was the Sokolov that I liked. Both the melody and the tricky figurations were delivered much deeper than others, but the expression was never distorted. The image was the same but it was starker. This time I think I found a rule of thumb regarding Sokolov. I like it when I feel the interpretation is normal but the actual playing time is significantly slower than usual. Sokolov’s Kreisleriana took 38 minutes, 10% slower than most.
Six encores were swiftly delivered, making this encore section just under half an hour. I don’t know why the last encore of many of his concerts this year was Bach-Busoni’s Ich ruf zu dir, but the last item in this recital is Sokolov’s signature encore, Bach-Siloti’s Prelude. I was happy to hear this tonight as it was played in less than half recitals that I heard of him.
