The second Wagner opera had just one performance in his lifetime. I was already content with last night’s Die Feen. After watching this I felt I might have set the bar too low. I’ve already had a liking for the overture, but listening to the opera on disc left me indifferent. But what a difference a live staged performance made! The boisterous, Italian overture is an accurate representation of the full opera. It really has so much fun, and the Italian style is most reminiscent of Donizetti, although the final act’s plot is like a rip off from Mozart’s Figaro. Wolfgang Sawallisch programmed this work in Munich for the Wagner centenary in 1983. He sincerely recommended the work yet asked opera lovers forget what they thought about Wagner and savour this opera. Very true, Wagnerians are very prone to consider this work utterly non-Wagnerian.
I don’t know how the Shakespeare original (Measure for Measure) unfolds but I really admire Wagner’s libretto which is way better than Die Feen. What I love most of all is its infinite subtleties. The ban of love is indeed a ban of sex, or unwedded sex. The fact that Isabella is in a cloister implies their animosity because their deceased father obviously hasn’t left anything for her and therefore she is doomed to end her life as a nun. Still she chooses to help his brother who is actually a playboy like his buddy Luzio. Isabella knows about Mariana’s sexual liaisons with Friedrich so she knows the implications of pleading with Friedrich.
Unlike Die Feen last night, tonight’s Das Liebesverbot had a front rank soprano Manuela Uhl singing the role of Isabella. Before the curtain went up it was announced that Uhl had something wrong with her voice but she woud try her best. She did leave out at least two top notes at the end of their respective duets but she really delivered the power of a Wagnerian and brought justice to this neglected early Wagner opera. If opera houses are putting on rarer, less deserving operas, it’s a shame that this very well-written, funny early Wagner is overlooked by so many houses, big or small.
